Question O' The Day

Ok. Another Great Imponderable, or at least something we've been pondering, although I suspect it does have a real answer. Ready?

Where does all the caffeine from decaffeinated coffee go?

  1. Sold to soda companies, who use it to spike their drinks with the divine, life-giving alkaloid.

  2. Ok. I've heard that before but thought it was a myth. See? Now I'm all excited because there are so many people out there who know this stuff!

  3. It is used in the manufacture of ink, actually! Certain water-based tempera paints are laced with caffeine, which acts as a stabilizer. Dangerous practice, I think – exposure can cause dementia, brain damage, and other neurological side effects. Recently there were 50,000 or so protesters on the mall in Washington, and their signs were painted in tempera paint with stuff like "don't socialize my medicare!" and other remarkably insane things on them.

  4. Schuyler, I'm going to have to ask for a source. I googled high and low and couldn't find any non-food or drug uses for caffeine anywhere. I'm going to go with the "soda" answer and add "pharmaceuticals" to it.

  5. Source? Oh...yeah. The source is "Schuyler The Cat and his Remarkable, Charming Wit and Sense of Humor."

And you can QUOTE me on that, Messy!!! I so funny.

  6. Since most decaf is now "Swiss water processed" it goes into moutain streams and those formerly peaceful cows and other animals and fish become hyper but they also have a grand old time waiting for the booze that is sure to follow....
